Case Study Analysis

Dorah Zalwango

  1. Identify 3 disease processes that are exhibited by this patient.

(1) Anxiety
(2) Hypertension
(3) Malignant breast tumor

  1. Is DS experiencing metaplasia, malignant neoplasm, or both?

malignant neoplasm

Define metaplasia:

A change in cells to a form that is not usually found in the tissue where it is, for instance the lump in DS’s breast.

Define malignant neoplasm:

cancerous cells that have gone through abnormal changes in their DNA. These cells will travel to various parts of the body. DS has malignant breast cancer meaning there is chance of spreading to other parts of the body.

Diagnosis

DS has malignant breast cancer, which is cellular growth that leads to a mass, which was detected on breast exam. A biopsy must be done to determine the type of growth, which led to her diagnosis.

Medical history

DS has a medical history that includes Anxiety, Depression and Hypertension.

Etiology

DS’ etiology includes having a family history of breast cancer; her mother and aunt have had breast cancer. There is no pain at the location of the lump, only at the biopsy site. She does admit to some fatigue and a little bit of nausea, which she thinks is related to her anxiety.

Prognosis

DS’ prognosis is not good considering the type of cancer she has, there are high chances of the cancer metastasizing to other parts of the body.

Benign neoplasm

A benign neoplasm is non-cancerous tumor.

Subjective signs

DS complaints of pain to the biopsy site, nausea, and fatigue.

Complication

DS is experiencing fatigue as a complication.

Treatment

DS has treatment options such as surgery if the cancer has not metastasized, chemotherapy to destruction and stop the malignant cells from growing or increasing in number, radiation to cut off circulation to tumor cells (VanMeter & Hubert, 2018).

Cancer

Breast Cancer

Exam (objective) findings

DS presents with anxiety due to the surgery she is about to undergo.

  1. Describe how you will respond to her statement. Include discussion of recommended screening and prevention practices, and how these relate to the pathophysiologic process that led to the development of this disease in DS. Use evidence other than your text to support your answer.

DS, am sorry that you are going through this. Some of the you could have reduced your chances of getting breast cancer would have been maintaining a normal and heathy weight, through exercise, scheduling first mammogram earlier (American Cancer Society, n.d.).  It is recommended that patients that have a family history of breast cancer should be screened earlier than other patients. The other factor is your race, 121.5 cases per 100,000 cases are black women with breast cancer Richardson et al., 2016).

Grading Category: Assignments

Overview

Throughout this course, you will be tasked with viewing and analyzing various case studies. Some case studies will present you with case information and text entry areas where you can respond to the case study prompts. As you progress through the case study, each of your responses will be stored. At the end of the case study, you will download your responses and submit them to the weekly assignment section in the online classroom.

As an advanced practice nurse, you will need to learn where to find appropriate research and resources that are designed for medical personnel and not patients: for assignments in this course, please do not use external websites or articles designed for patient use. In addition to your text and course materials, remember to use appropriate terminology and support your answers with evidence-based, peer-reviewed sources that have been published within the past 3–5 years.

Instructions

  1. After completing the required learning activities and Quizlet game for this week, view the Week 1 Assignment 3: Case Study Analysis.
  2. At the end of the case study, download your responses and submit the document to this assignment.

Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.
